Young Friends of Film: L.I.E.
Thursday, August 14, 2008 at 7:30pm

Director Michael Cuesta, actor Paul Dano & other special guests onstage for a Q&A after the screening, followed by a party with an open bar and hors d’oeuvres in the Furman Gallery.

“Michael Cuesta has the stubborn curiosity of an artist who won’t settle for formulas but is intrigued by the secrets and mysteries of his characters.”—Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun Times

“Paul Franklin Dano is a sensitive, expressive young actor who, you feel watching him, might be on the verge of doing some really fine work as his experience and instincts develop.”—Charles Taylor, Salon

L.I.E.
Michael Cuesta, USA, 2001; 97m

Troubled teenager Howie Blitzer (Paul Dano) struggles with his mother’s recent death on the Long Island Expressway. It doesn’t help that his father can’t connect with him or that he hangs out with a rough crowd. Matters only get worse when they rob the house of Big John (Brian Cox), an ex-Marine, neighborhood favorite and secret pedophile.

Anchored by stunning performances, L.I.E. is a gripping come-of-age story that sparked both acclaim and controversy after its screenings at Sundance and New Directors/New Films 2001. Dano won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Debut Performance, foreshadowing his success in Little Miss Sunshine and There Will Be Blood.
