Never Apologize
Malcolm McDowell in person for the NY Premiere Engagement!
and
Lindsay Anderson: Revolutionary Romantic
Aug 15 – 21

“THOROUGHLY ENGAGING! Mr. McDowell breaks out an array of celebrity impressions... But the documentary’s strongest moments are also its most touching, like Mr. Anderson’s poignant encounter with his idol John Ford and his powerful crush on Richard Harris, the star of his first feature, This Sporting Life.” - Jeannette Catsoulis, The New York Times

*** [THREE STARS] “ENTERTAINING AND TOUCHING! McDowell offers loving stories about his mentor.” - V.A. Musetto, New York Post

“AN OUTSPOKENLY IMPASSIONED REBEL… Mr. Anderson took no prisoners.” - Stephen Holden, The New York Times

Lindsay Anderson helped launch a revolution in British writing about film that was in its way as profound as the one simultaneously exploding across the Channel in Paris. Like his French critic contemporaries, he eventually turned to filmmaking. This August we remember Lindsay Anderson with the NY premiere of Mike Kaplan’s Never Apologize, a tour-de-force performance by Anderson discovery Malcolm McDowell, discussing his and Anderson’s complex relationship. We’re also screening Anderson’s major features and two masterworks by John Ford, about whom Anderson wrote so eloquently. Both Kaplan & McDowell will be on hand to answer questions after many of the screenings. View the line-up of films in the retrospective. Browse the Calendar to buy tickets online.

Wounded Pride, Simmering Passion: Roberto Gavaldón
Aug 22 – 28

Best known internationally for his Oscar-nominated Macario, Roberto Gavaldón was Mexican cinema’s consummate professional, an artist who brought his vast knowledge of the craft of cinema to an enormously varied range of works. This sampler of key works by Gavaldón, including a thrilling trilogy of films based on the writings of B. Traven, is a powerful reminder of how much there is yet to be discovered in the remarkable film tradition of our neighbor to the south.

Captain Ahab
Film Comment Selects Special Screening
Mon Aug 25

French filmmaker Philippe Ramos imagines the backstory of Moby Dick’s most famous character in five chapters, from his escape from a harsh childhood in the New England hinterlands to his final destiny at sea. Starring Denis Lavant.

Cinematic Atlas: The Triumphs of Charlton Heston
Aug 29 – Sept 4

For some of us, at least when we were growing up, Charlton Heston was the cinema: his very presence on screen guaranteed an experience so much larger than life that we’d be transported from our seats in the movie theater to a whole other reality. Our brief salute to one of American cinema's true icons showcases eleven of the late actor's most memorable films including Ben-Hur, Touch of Evil, Earthquake and Soylent Green.
