In this stunning debut, Alejandro González Iñárritu (Babel) effortlessly interweaves three complex storylines that collide via a terrible car crash. A young punk stumbles into the world of dog-fighting; an injured supermodel's designer pooch disappears under her apartment's floorboards; an ex-radical turned street person rescues a Rottweiler. Showing a sure narrative hand, González Iñárritu drives this gripping film from Tarantinoesque action into Buñuelian surrealism and back again, powering the ride with his own uncompromising vision of love's labors lost. Warning: Though the disclaimer states no animal was harmed, the film contains a number of graphic scenes in which dogs appear to be injured or killed.

In the middle of another boring Sunday, left home alone by their parents, pals Flama and Moko order pizza and have thumbs ready for video games. Things don’t go as planned. A showdown with the pizza delivery man ensues, while Rita, a young girl from down the hall, arrives to bake her own birthday cake in their oven. Then the power in the building fails and the kids find themselves whiling away the time revealing their hopes and fears. Director Fernando Eimbcke casts a sharp light on adolescent love, friendship, loneliness, and estrangement in this finely crafted debut.

Carlos Reygadas’ debut feature tells the story of a man who journeys to an isolated village in a canyon to take his life. Reygadas is less interested in plot than in immersing us in the unsettling experience of clashing extremes: his long takes of minute details of everyday life shock us not only for their violence, but for how they bring us up close with the sharp contrasts inherent in life and nature. Set to music by Bach, Shostakovich and Arvo Pärt, and shot on 16mm Cinemascope that heightens the film’s gritty yet lyrical quality, this tour de force by one of recent Mexican cinema's most promising talents won the Camera D’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2002.

Based on a true story, Violet Perfume follows Yessica and Miriam, two lower-class teenage girls who meet in high school in Mexico City and develop a deep and moving bond. Their daily routine and mutual trust is disrupted violently when Yessica is raped and starts to be regularly victimized by her violent stepbrother. The indifference and selfishness of the adult world that surrounds them destroys the girls’ friendship, bringing them too close to tragedy. Violet’s vertiginous pace and vibrant camera make it one of the more stylistically groundbreaking films to emerge from recent Mexican cinema.
