Rachid Bouchareb’s Days of Glory (Indigenes)
Thurs Feb 1: 7

Awarded an ensemble acting award at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, Days of Glory caused a sensation in France by highlighting the nation’s struggle for “non-French” veterans of World War II to receive their pensions and compensation from the government. Rachid Bouchareb’s powerful new film is a tribute to these “non-French” soldiers, whose stories – even presence in battle – have been written out of most standard histories.

Immediately following the screening, Richard Peña, program director for the Film Society of Lincoln Center, will moderate a panel discussion with Debra Everett-Lane, lecturer in contemporary French history at Columbia University, and Gil Anidjar, professor of comparative literature at Columbia specializing in the North African Diaspora.

Ghost Dog

Days of Glory (Indigenes)
Rachid Bouchareb, 2006; France/Algeria, 120m
Preparing to invade Nazi-occupied France, the First French Army recruits over 100,000 soldiers from France’s African colonies, the vast majority from Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. Abdelkader (Sami Bouajila) joins up to defend the ideals of liberté, égalité, fraternité – even if he does not enjoy them himself back home. For Yassir (Samy Nacéri), the Army means adventure, while Saïd (Jamel Debbouze) uses it to escape poverty. Messaoud (Roschdy Zem) just wants to see if his romantic visions of France are true. All four men will be severely tested – physically, politically and morally – as their battles on the frontlines are set against the racism of their French commanders.
