The Birch Tree / Breza
Series: Beyond Boundaries: The Emergence of Croatian Cinema
Director: Ante Babaja, Country: Croatia, Release: 1967, Runtime: 100

Inspired by a well-known painting, Ante Babaja’s The Birch Tree is one of Croatian cinema’s finest examples of blending the modern technology of cinema with the country’s rich traditions of folk art. A frail, delicate woman, Janica (a lovely performance by Manca Kosir), attracts the attention of a local rake, Marko (Velimir 'Bata' Zivojinovic), known for having his way with many other women of the area. They marry, but soon Marko returns to his old ways; only with her death will he realize how much he truly loved her. Told with the simplicity of a fable, the film largely uses non-actors and effectively captures the rhythms and textures of peasant life. The cinematography is by Tomislave Pinter, whose artistry was a key element in many of the finest Croatian films of the period.
