Independents Night: The Judge and the General
Thursday, August 7, 2008 at 6:30 pm

Co-director Elizabeth Farnsworth, former chief correspondent for The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, will introduce the film. Robert MacNeil, journalist and former executive editor of The NewsHour, will moderate a post-screening Q&A with Farnsworth and Judge Guzmán. A reception in the Frieda and Roy Furman Gallery will follow the event.

Scene Photo Pinochet ruled Chile with an iron fist. A decade after his fall, a one-time supporter must rule on the dictator’s crimes.

In 1998, conservative judge Juan Guzmán was appointed by judicial lottery to prosecute the first criminal cases against General Augusto Pinochet, Chile’s deposed leader whose regime Guzmán had supported. The Judge and the General follows Guzmán’s descent into what he calls “the abyss” of crimes committed by Pinochet’s government, as he confronts his past collusion with the violent dictator and faces his own doubts about the general’s guilt.

Exploring the nature of hope, political commitment and the responsibility of those people who abide state-sanctioned terror for the promise of safety, journalists and filmmakers Elizabeth Farnsworth and Patricio Lanfranco offer a focused investigation into terrorism and torture that mirrors headlines today. Farnsworth was chief correspondent for The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer from 1995 to 2000. Lanfranco has been a prominent researcher and producer in Chile for two decades.
