China's Olympic Challenges
Photographs by Kadir van Lohuizen

June 13 – 26

In the Frieda and Roy Furman Gallery ~ adjacent to the Walter Reade Theater lobby. Open daily 1:30 to 6pm.

Photographer Kadir van Lohuizen partnered with Human Rights Watch to document migrant workers racing the clock to finish Olympic construction before the opening ceremonies, rural petitioners whose temporary housing in Beijing was demolished soon after the one-year countdown began, and residents being unjustly evicted from their homes to make way for Olympic venues. The photographs in this exhibition, taken in August 2007, show facets of Beijing that Olympic organizers would prefer to conceal. For more information visit china.hrw.org

Kadir van Lohuizen is a founding member of Noor Images who has documented human rights abuses in Asia, Africa and the Middle East, and most recently received a fellowship to capture the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in the United States. He has won numerous awards for his photographs, which have been featured in solo exhibits and published worldwide. He has published several books including Diamond Matters and Rivers.
