Hot from Cannes where it won the Jury Prize, we bring you the U.S. premiere of Oldboy director Park Chan-wook’s gory but goofy grand guignol take on the vampire film—a genre hybrid that takes its horror-romance premise and shifts gears into black comedy and screwball farce with an adultery-and-murder intrigue plot lifted from Zola’s Thérèse Raquin. Song Kang-ho, star of the blockbuster The Host, plays a diligent Catholic priest who becomes a reluctant vampire with superhuman powers of flight and strength after volunteering to test a dangerous medical vaccine. He does his best to restrain his overpowering appetite and take care not to kill anyone, until a reunion with a sickly childhood friend and his doting mother brings him into the orbit of said friend’s put-upon wife Tae-ju (Kim Ok-vin) and one thing leads to another… But if it seems like love at first bite, forget it: when your newly vampirized lover doesn’t share your moral compunctions and her lust for blood outstrips yours, what’s a good Christian vampire to do?
